National Honor Society

The National Honor Society of Southern Regional High School is one of 15,000 NHS chapters in the United States. It is governed by national as well as local standards. The NHS is not only an organization that recognizes high academic achievement — it also has a service component embedded in its structure. Successful candidates and members are held to the same high standards of scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

Students need to begin to prepare now to meet the criteria for future NHS membership.

Selection Process

A five-member Faculty Council selects members of the National Honor Society in the spring of each year. Juniors who have earned a 95% weighted GPA by February 1 are invited to complete a Student Information Form. GPA is based upon grades earned from grades 9-11. This year's seniors will have a second opportunity to apply in the fall, as long as their GPA is 93% or better.

Selection Criteria

  • 1. Character

    A positive role model of honesty, integrity, respect, and attitude.

  • 2. Community Service

    All students must obtain 50 volunteer service hours. No more than 25 hours can be earned in any one area. There should be evidence of service completed each year with a positive progression of hours.

  • 3. Leadership

    Evidence of positive attitude, consistent attendance, ability to meet deadlines, respect for self and others, and adherence to school policies. Students should not have more than 15 lates or 17 absences throughout a school year.

  • 4. School Activities

    Actively involved in at least two activities per year prior to membership — including marching band, sports, theater, Student Council, Interact, and others.

Acceptable Community Service

We believe in a multifaceted approach requiring a wide variety of volunteer activities that serve the greater community. Activities must extend beyond the boundaries of the sponsoring organization.

  • Any event where fees are donated to an organization.
  • Teaching or assisting with CCD.
  • Food Pantry / Soup Kitchen.
  • Sports camps outside of Southern where student provides unpaid service.
  • Southern Sports Camp — volunteer time only; not a camp requirement.
  • Community events providing a free public service (not a class requirement).
  • Ocean County Library volunteer.
  • Southern Ocean Medical Center volunteer.
  • Volunteering at senior centers.
  • First aid / fire departments.
  • Girl Scouts / Boy Scouts community events (no advancement gained).
  • Beach clean-up.
  • Mission / relief work projects.
  • Usher / ticket taker at plays (not a Tri-M requirement).

Chowderfest hours are capped at a maximum of 10 hours total.

Relay for Life is capped at 10 hours total and requires documentation of team meetings or fundraising activities.

Service Activities Not Accepted

  • Participating in Church / Mass.
  • Regular SRHS Club Meetings.
  • Any standard activity signed off only by a parent.
  • Participating in school plays, musicals, or band performances.
  • Any events which occur during the school day.
  • Hours accumulated as part of curriculum or a class grade.
  • Service at a for-profit business.
  • Private babysitting.
  • Performing the tasks / job of someone else.
  • Any event where a student receives payment or compensation.
